The leader of leftist DiEM25 and controversial former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis was hospitalised over the weekend after he was physically attacked by a group of young people.

People with covered faces and COVID masks approached the table where Varoufakis was sitting and told him “come outside to have a word”. Varoufaki stood up and went outside the bar, where they beat him, according to OPEN TV channel.

Varoufakis was then hospitalised and according to Greek media, his nose was broken.

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested, while others aged between 20 and 22 years old have been identified.

All of them have participated in riots in the past and have been on the radar of the authorities.

Greek political parties condemned the attack. Greek government spokesperson Giannis Oikonomou said in Greece’s democracy “no form of violence is tolerated” while opposition Syriza described the attack as “fascist”.
