At least 150 people were injured after two suburban trains collided in the Spanish town of Montcada i Reixac, near Barcelona on Wednesday, emergency officials said.

The local emergency services reported that 150 people were in a “mild condition” and the other five were “in a less serious condition” in a statement on Twitter, EURACTIV’s partner EFE reported.

The accident occurred when one of the trains, bound for Barcelona, crashed into another from behind while it was stopped at the Montcada station, the state-owned railway company Renfe said.

Catalan police have launched an inquiry into the accident.

Transport Minister Raquel Sánchez tweeted that she was monitoring the situation “closely” and that the causes of the accident were under investigation.

In another tweet, the president of the government of Catalonia, Pere Aragonès, called for an “urgent” improvement of the train service in Catalonia, saying that it “cannot be postponed,” and asked for “all the explanations from Renfe, Adif and the Spanish government.”

Rail traffic on the three affected lines has been restored after being suspended for more than an hour and a half.
