Six envelopes containing explosives, one of which was sent to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez – have been intercepted and deactivated by Spanish security forces since 24 November and are believed to have been posted from within the country.
The envelopes were sent to the Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid and the Instalaza arms manufacturing company in Zaragoza on Wednesday and again on Thursday at the Torrejón de Ardoz military air base, the Spanish Defence Ministry, and the US embassy in Madrid, EURACTIV’s partner EFE reported.
The Secretary of State for Security, Rafael Pérez, informed that the first five envelopes came from Spanish territory, according to initial investigations.
Pérez explained that they are all of similar characteristics and brown in colour, stressing that initial investigations suggest they were sent “from Spanish territory.”
A number of envelopes suspected of containing explosive material were intercepted by authorities and detonated safely by specialist from the Spanish National Police, the Interior Ministry sources told EFE.
Meanwhile, the Spanish Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, on Thursday called for “calm”.
