FBI agents have raided the Croatia-moored luxury yacht of Ukrainian tycoon Viktor Medvedchuk, accused by Kyiv of treason for his pro-Russian activities.
The search of the 92-metre-long Royal Romance yacht, moored at the Adriatic town of Trogir, was carried out upon a search warrant issued on 15 November by the US department of justice and confirmed by the county court in the Croatian city of Split, Jutarnji List daily reported.
Judge Dinko Mešin, who is also the Split county court’s spokesman, confirmed the raid to the daily but declined to provide more details as the whole procedure is classified.
Medvedchuk, who was elected to the Ukrainian parliament in 2019, was put on the sanctions list by the country’s national security council on suspicion of financing terrorism and accused of treason in 2021. He is considered an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin and was sanctioned by the US Treasury this January for “activities to destabilise Ukraine.”
Medvedchuk escaped house arrest on 28 February 2022, four days after Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine but was arrested in April by Ukraine’s security service.
In September, Medvedchuk and 55 other Russian prisoners of war were exchanged for 215 Ukrainians detained after the siege of Mariupol.
