French Minister Caroline Cayeux resigned after the High Authority for the Transparency of Public Life (HATVP) said her declaration of assets is undervalued.
Cayeux explained that the reason behind her resignation is a dispute over her declared assets which all French political leaders must file publicly. “Following my declaration of assets, the High Authority for the transparency of public life told me that it considered it undervalued,” she tweeted.
“I have, therefore obviously taken into account its observations and aligned myself with its assessments in a letter dated 21 November,” Cayeux added.
“Despite this, the High Authority persists in questioning my sincerity. In this context, it seemed preferable to me to resign so as not to impede the government’s action.”
She will be replaced by State Secretary for Rural Affairs Dominique Faure.
Last July, members of the presidential majority had jointly signed a tribune to ask for the withdrawal of Cayeux from the government following a televised interview where she was criticised for homophobic views.
She then apologised on Twitter, but did not resign from office.
“Caroline Cayeux resigns. Not for her LGBT-phobic comments, which did not bother Macron, but following a disagreement with the HATVP on her declaration of assets,” commented far-left MP Bastien Lachaud.
