EU leaders come together for the last summit of the year on Thursday (16 December) to discuss external challenges (Russia, migration), agree on ways to boost vaccination and contain the coronavirus pandemic and try to breathe life into a joint security and defence vision for the bloc.
No major decisions are expected at the one-day, in-person meeting in Brussels. The summit marks also the debut of Social Democrat Olaf Scholz as Germany’s new chancellor, after 16 years of Angela Merkel, possibly signalling some new dynamics and priorities in the European Council.
