“We will not be drawn into an endless cycle of meetings”: US Secretary of State on the failure of peace talks on Ukraine

Peace talks on Ukraine have stalled, but the US is ready to continue mediation if the talks are constructive.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has once again acknowledged that US-brokered talks between Ukraine and Russia have not been fruitful. He also denied rumors of alleged US pressure on Ukraine, he told reporters in Sweden, reports European Pravda.

“Despite false leaks, despite stories that we are forcing Ukrainians to take this or that position, which is not true, if we see an opportunity to organize negotiations that are productive, not counterproductive, and that have a chance to be fruitful, we are ready to fulfill that role,” the Secretary of State said.

He also called on other countries to join the negotiation process.

Rubio noted that the war can only end through a negotiated settlement — it will not end with a military victory for one side or the other, at least from the traditional perspective of defining military victories.

“Therefore, we will be happy to do so if there is an opportunity to hold constructive and productive negotiations. We are also not interested in getting involved in an endless cycle of meetings that lead nowhere,” he said.

“FACTS” wrote that during a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump, Russian leader Vladimir Putin said that one should not expect a quick conclusion of a peace agreement on the war in Ukraine – at least by the end of the year. Putin effectively made it clear to the American side that the upcoming negotiations are unlikely to bring a concrete result or end with the signing of agreements.

The Russian leadership is convinced that Donbass can be captured by the end of the year. After that, the Kremlin is considering the option of negotiating with Ukraine from a more favorable position.
