Mette Frederiksen, the acting head of government in Denmark, will make another endeavor to reconstruct the government nearly two months following the polls. As reported by DW on Saturday, she received this mandate on May 23 after dialogues about creating a new cabinet.

The governmental deadlock in Denmark has persisted for almost a couple of months. Following the parliamentary elections on March 24, 2026, neither the left nor the right faction garnered a clear majority, leading to protracted and thus far fruitless coalition negotiations.

On Saturday, King Frederick X of Denmark conducted discussions with party chiefs at his residence, Amalienborg Palace, regarding the formation of a new cabinet, as coalition talks spearheaded by the leader of the right-leaning liberal party, the acting Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, collapsed.

Frederiksen had previously sought to assemble a new administration, but was unsuccessful. Consequently, King Frederick X of Denmark entrusted the head of the center-right Liberal Party, Troels Lund Poulsen, with the undertaking.

The decision came as a noteworthy surprise within Danish politics, as Frederiksen had been a vital presence in the nation for a number of years. Her center-left Social Democratic Party secured the highest number of votes in the parliamentary elections in March, although it marked the party’s poorest performance since 1903. No single political entity attained a majority.

Poulsen was given 14 days to create a cabinet, but he too was unable to form a coalition.

The situation became repetitive.

Now, Mette Frederiksen gets a second opportunity to establish a government.

Nevertheless, Ukraine, despite Denmark’s internal challenges, can remain at ease: both figures — Frederiksen and Poulsen — consistently and steadfastly back Ukraine: Denmark stands as one of our crucial, exceedingly dependable allies and a remarkably unwavering source of support. And there is anticipation that this backing will endure under any circumstances. Denmark furnishes Ukraine with considerable military, financial, and humanitarian aid. A decade-long agreement regarding security assurances has also been formalized.
