Russia first showed the Geran-5 cruise missile at the parade: why is it dangerous?

On May 9, Moscow hosted the shortest Victory Day parade in modern Russian history. There was no military equipment at the parade. But the Russians showed for the first time in a video presentation the new Geran-5 cruise missile, which has already been used in Ukraine, Defense Express reports.

According to experts, the video was likely filmed at a launch site in the Oryol region.

VIDEO OF THE DAY

The appearance of the Gerani-5 resembles the Iranian Karrar missile, from which the Russians copied the wing layout and air-to-air missile equipment.

The rocket is made of components that are as unified as possible with other models in this line. These include both Chinese components, including the engine, and components manufactured in Western countries.

Thanks to the jet engine, which allows the cruise missile to reach speeds of approximately 600 km/h, the Geran-5 could become a separate threat to Ukrainian air defense, especially if it is overloaded during massive attacks, analysts note.

The Geran-5 is being compared online to the Ukrainian FP-5 Flamingo or the German V-1. Experts, however, attribute it to a new class of “low-cost cruise missiles” that is being actively developed in the West.

The Geranium-5 is smaller than the Flamingo, has a significantly smaller warhead of 90 kg and a three-times shorter range of 1,000 km.

President Zelensky's strategic advisor, Oleksandr Kamyshyn, published a photo of the Gerani-5 and called the device a new Russian missile drone.

“Some mistakenly compare it to the Ukrainian FP-5 Flamingo — that's just because the Russians tried to copy it, and they look pretty similar. But that's where size matters — the Russian has a range/payload ~10 times smaller. The Russian Geran-5 is somewhere between our Peklo/Palyanytsia missile drones,” he wrote.

Recall, the chief designer and co-owner of the Ukrainian company Fire Point, Denis Shtilerman, stated that Ukrainian ballistic missiles FP-7 and FP-9 could become a serious threat to Russian regions, including Moscow, this summer.
