According to the publication, Berlin hopes to convince the administration of US President Donald Trump to agree to the sale of Tomahawk missiles along with Typhon ground-based launch systems.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is expected to travel to Washington to resume talks on the purchase of the systems, but sources say the US side has yet to provide an official response.

The FT's interlocutors also clarified that the trip would depend on the possibility of organizing a meeting between Pistorius and US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

As a reminder, on May 1, Washington announced a reduction in its military presence in Germany by 5,000 troops. After that, the German Ministry of Defense stated that the US decision to partially withdraw troops would not affect plans to deploy long-range Tomahawk missiles in the country.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said there was “no connection” between his row with Donald Trump and the US withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany. He added that this was expected because the troops were only temporarily stationed in Germany under Trump's predecessor Joe Biden and their withdrawal had been discussed for some time.
