In 2026, President Volodymyr Zelensky has adopted a firmer and more autocratic approach in his interactions with European partners. He is increasingly giving lectures, which is generating discontent among Europeans, Politico reports.
Correspondents note that the Ukrainian head of state is demonstrating less restraint when it comes to engaging with Europe, boosted by a renewed conviction in Ukraine’s ability to endure.
“Right now, the bond between Kyiv and Brussels is strained and has possibly reached its nadir since the onset of the war,” a former Ukrainian government official shares anonymously.
During an informal gathering of EU leaders in Cyprus in April, European allies reproved Zelensky for his aspirations concerning EU membership and his dismissal of phased accession. While Ukraine is still preparing to enact anti-corruption measures, Zelensky maintains that Kyiv “merits complete membership in the European Union” – and swiftly.
It is suggested that Zelensky’s relentless requests have previously resulted in awkward circumstances. Notably, with those leaders who were sympathetic to him . For example, in 2022, US President Joe Biden grew frustrated with the Ukrainian leader when he sought even greater assistance, just after Biden concluded discussing the approval of an additional billion dollars in military support with him.
“Zelensky, specifically, not only Zelensky, but a great many Ukrainians, genuinely think that they are fighting not just for Ukraine, but for the entirety of Europe and the West. And thus, there’s no justification to be grateful to anyone, thank anyone, or temper your demands. He strongly believes that Europe is indebted to Ukraine. This shapes his mindset and manner of speaking. But this disregards that not all Europeans perceive it the same way ,” a foreign policy specialist from the Republican Party, who has previously advised Kyiv, points out.
Zelensky’s communication style, Politico conveys, runs the risk of alienating the very associates Ukraine relies on for funding. At the World Economic Forum in Davos in February, he took European leaders by surprise when he sharply criticized them for not contributing enough for Ukraine and their own defense. The rebuke infuriated many within the audience, who had previously taken European leaders to task under Donald Trump.
“It was quite unexpected. Zelensky is dissatisfied with the manner in which the Europeans have rallied support,” says Natia Seskuria, an analyst at the Royal United Services Institute, a London-based research organization.
Politico reporters outlined the factors behind Zelensky’s escalated discourse. In their assessment, this was affected by the fact that Ukraine has undergone perhaps the most challenging winter of the whole war. Now, Zelensky’s assurance in Ukraine’s capacity to keep battling in the conflict is increasing at a remarkable rate. Furthermore, Ukraine is evolving into a self-sustaining defense hub : it is already producing close to half of its weapons requirements and intends to export drones to the Middle East.
“Ukraine’s resilience implies it doesn’t have to depend as much on others as it formerly did,” Politico concludes.
To remind you, former US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken stated that claims that allies “exploited” the US in backing Ukraine are unfounded. According to him, European and other nations have invested even greater amounts of funds in aiding Kyiv than the US.
