Boris Ruge, presently holding the role of Assistant Secretary General of NATO for Political Affairs and Security Policy, is slated to be the fresh German envoy to Ukraine. Spiegel indicates that the ultimate confirmation is anticipated today, referencing insider information.

As stated by the news source, at the proposition of Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful, further pivotal roles were settled upon amidst the customary reshuffling of German diplomats. The designation of Ruge is integrated within this rotation.

It is highlighted that the 64-year-old diplomat formerly occupied the positions of deputy chairman of the Munich Security Conference, and also served as ambassador to both the United States and Saudi Arabia.

As a reminder, the office of German Ambassador to Ukraine became available this past February, following the declaration that Ambassador Heiko Thoms would relocate to Madrid. He assumed the Ukrainian post last summer, subsequent to the German government’s selection of the former Ambassador, Martin Jaeger, to lead the Federal Intelligence Service.

Previously, there were reports concerning a meeting in Kyiv between Bundestag representative Roderich Kiesewetter and Akhmed Zakayev, the exiled Chechen Republic leader. Subsequently, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned Alexander Lambsdorff, the ambassador to Russia, and conveyed a “stern protest” to him within the department.
