Africa Bisected: Researchers Find Massive Subterranean Fracture

A colossal fracture has been unearthed under Africa, potentially altering the arrangement of the landmasses.

Experts have detected a substantial fault, stretching 500km in length, underneath Africa, named the Rovum Transform Boundary. This subterranean formation extends from Mozambique to Tanzania and fundamentally influences how the continents will shift going forward.

This is according to a report by the Daily Mail.

Specialists liken this fracture to guide rails. It assists in separating the Nubian and Somali tectonic plates, guiding their trajectory.

“These fractures could behave as railroad tracks, influencing the subsequent direction of a tectonic plate's motion. It might also imply that the plates can pivot more readily in a specific orientation,” elucidated Dr. Jordan Fethean.

This boundary is considered to be a “fossil” fault, remaining from the separation of the supercontinent Gondwana. It had remained unseen for eons due to its concealment under fluvial sediment. It was only brought to light through the use of satellites and seismic surveying, which function as “ultrasound” for the world. It came to light that the Earth’s crust is markedly thinning in this location — an ancient “scar” through which Madagascar detached from Africa 100 million years prior.

Researchers anticipate that with the passage of time, this fracture may reactivate. In the far-off future, Africa will ultimately cleave into two portions, and a novel ocean will materialize between them. Down the line, the steady displacement of the plates will culminate in all continents reuniting into a singular supercontinent once more, with Antarctica situated at the North Pole.
