China's customary military exercises in the vicinity of Taiwan are “entirely warranted and sensible,” and Taipei’s administration is to blame for any escalating tensions, as stated by the Chinese Defense Ministry on Friday, April 17, according to Reuters.
Zhang Xiaogang, a spokesperson for the Chinese Defense Ministry, informed reporters that Taiwan constitutes “an inseparable component of Chinese territory.”
“The People’s Liberation Army organizes training and exercises in the seas and airspace surrounding the Taiwan island in order to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial wholeness; such actions are completely justified, rational, and natural,” he asserted.
China generally avoids commenting on its everyday drills in proximity to the island.
Zhang further noted that it is the ruling Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan that is “misrepresenting” China's endeavors, “instigating anxieties about conflict, terrorizing the island’s populace, and inflaming discord and animosity in the Taiwan Strait.”
China has declined discussions with Taiwan's President William Lai, referring to him as a “separatist.” Speaking at a military installation in southern Taiwan on Friday, Lai expressed that while everyone desires peace, authentic peace can only be realized through fortitude. He reiterated his plea for the opposition-controlled parliament to sanction an additional $40 billion for defense expenditures.
“Only through sustained preparedness can we discourage threats — by being equipped to engage in battle to avert war,” Lai stated.
The United States, the primary supplier of arms to Taiwan, endorses Lai's proposal to augment defense spending on the island. China has consistently urged Washington to cease arms deliveries to Taiwan.
Zhang conveyed that Lai is utilizing the funds of the Taiwanese citizenry to “profess devotion and placate the United States.”
“Their sole concern lies in the potential for increased earnings, and they do not hesitate to capitalize on warfare,” Zhang appended, alluding to the United States.
Beijing, which asserts sovereignty over democratically governed Taiwan, dispatches naval vessels and aircraft into the waters and airspace encompassing the island on a near-daily basis, eliciting condemnation from the Taiwanese government. Beijing has never dismissed the option of employing force to seize Taiwan, but articulates a preference for “peaceful reunification.” China recently extended a series of financial and cultural “inducements” after the island’s opposition figurehead convened with Xi Jinping.
