Iran shoots down two American planes: media questions US air dominance

The war between the US and Iran has entered a more problematic phase after reports of the shooting down of two American fighter jets over Iranian territory. According to CNN, one of the crew members of the first plane was rescued and is receiving medical treatment, while the fate of the other remains unknown. In a subsequent incident, the pilot was able to fly the plane out of Iranian territory, eject and was rescued, a US official said.

Despite no confirmed US military deaths in the past three weeks, the events underscore the dangers of asymmetric warfare and cast doubt on the Trump administration's claims of “total control” over Iranian skies. The president and Defense Secretary Pete Buttigieg have previously said Iran has no means of countering US and Israeli air forces.

These incidents were yet another example of how reality contradicts official statements about US military dominance.

Meanwhile, Gulf states have nearly exhausted their Patriot stockpiles to counter Iranian strikes.
