According to various analysts, the number of American military personnel situated in the Middle East has surpassed 50,000 individuals, a figure that exceeds the typical presence by approximately 10,000.

This information is detailed in a report by The New York Times.

The report emphasizes that the arrival of 2,500 Marines in conjunction with an additional 2,500 sailors has amplified the comprehensive count of American forces within the area, occurring as US President Donald Trump deliberates additional actions in the month-spanning confrontation against Iran.

“While the precise assignments for the Marines hailing from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Group remain uncertain, US officials indicate that the President is weighing a broader offensive, such as an attempt to secure the island (Khark — ed.) or another territory, as part of Trump’s strategy to facilitate the passage through the Strait of Hormuz. This constricted waterway, usually responsible for the transit of roughly 20 percent of the world’s petroleum, has been significantly hindered by offensives executed by Iranian forces retaliating against the US and Israel’s military engagement within their nation,” the report elucidates.

As the publication highlights, the conventional number of American troops stationed at bases and aboard vessels across the countries in the region — including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait — hovers around 40,000.

According to a spokesperson from the US military, this count has now ascended beyond 50,000 due to the intensified state of hostilities against Iran.

Nevertheless, this statistic excludes the 4,500 military members aboard the aircraft carrier Gerald Ford, which recently departed the region following a succession of mechanical complications.

Specifically, a fire erupted on the ship, prompting its departure for Crete on March 23, later reaching Croatia. The subsequent itinerary of the vessel is presently undetermined.

Furthermore, in the preceding week, the Pentagon dispatched approximately 2,000 troops from the 82nd Airborne Division to the region to reinforce their capabilities.

Their specific positioning remains undisclosed; however, according to the publication, they are situated within range of Iran.

Namely, paratroopers might potentially be engaged in an operation aimed at seizing Kharq Island — a vital hub for Iranian petroleum exports in the Persian Gulf — or in other ground operations in combination with the Marines.

However, military authorities caution that even a contingent of 50,000 soldiers is inadequate for executing a large-scale terrestrial engagement.

“However, military experts warn that even 50,000 troops, many of whom are at sea, are not enough for any major ground operation. Israel has deployed more than 300,000 troops for its operations in the Gaza Strip, which began in October 2023. The US-led coalition that invaded Iraq in 2003 initially had nearly 250,000 troops. Iran, which is almost a third the size of the continental United States, has a population of about 93 million. Capturing, let alone holding, such a large and complex country with such weapons with a force of 50,000 troops is impossible, according to military experts,” the publication writes.

Prior reports indicated that the ongoing confrontation between the United States and Iran, which has persisted for a duration of four weeks, is instigating heightened apprehension amongst senior leadership at the Pentagon.

Prior reports also revealed that BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missiles, recognized as one of the pivotal offensive armaments of the United States, are progressively being mentioned in reports pertaining to potential malfunctions and unexploded ordnance.
