US President Donald Trump conveyed that NATO’s reluctance to collaborate in US military actions against Iran constituted a “trial” for the Alliance, and he would “bear in mind” their response, thus escalating his disapproval of the bloc, according to Bloomberg.
“That’s precisely why I harbor such disappointment in NATO. Because this served as a test for NATO,” Trump remarked on Thursday during a cabinet meeting held at the White House. “We won’t forget it.”
Subsequently, at the same occasion, Trump revisited the subject, highlighting his indignation. He communicated that he had implored NATO allies to lend a hand in re-establishing navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital energy channel that had been virtually obstructed during the conflict.
“They displayed a reluctance to intervene, and I anticipate that it will exact a heavy price on them,” he asserted.
Trump has progressively voiced dissatisfaction with the Alliance following member nations’ refusal to adhere to his demands and dispatch warships to guarantee the security of the strait.
This strategically significant waterway facilitates the transit of approximately 20% of global oil and gas provisions, and the war has precipitated a surge in fuel prices.
The president has maintained a critical stance toward NATO for an extended period, consistently challenging its utility and urging allies to augment defense expenditure to 5% of GDP. The war with Iran has merely intensified these strains.
On Thursday, Trump repeatedly articulated his discontent with the Alliance, once more labeling NATO a “paper tiger” that extended assistance in the Middle East conflict only after the US had “annihilated” Iran.
Criticism of Great Britain
Separately, Trump also rebuked the UK for proposing to dispatch the aircraft carrier considerably later than he stipulated the US required.
“Do not be concerned. We have no need for it,” Trump stated, indicating that he had informed the British government and disparagingly referring to British aircraft carriers as “toys in comparison to what we possess.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer encountered particularly severe condemnation from Trump after initially declining to accede to the president’s request to permit the US to employ British military installations to attack Iran.
The British administration subsequently authorized the US to utilize the installations for “limited defensive maneuvers.”
Dispute concerning the Diego Garcia base
On Thursday, Trump also alluded to the military installation located on the island of Diego Garcia within the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean.
The US President has frequently censured the British government’s accord to cede sovereignty over the island and the ensuing lease of a military base.
“It all commenced with an island — an island that the native population asserted from your nation, and for reasons unknown, you consented to it,” Trump expressed.
“When we required this island to land that remarkable B-2 bomber, we were informed that we could not utilize it and were compelled to return to Missouri — that constitutes a 17-hour journey as opposed to a mere few hours. And I responded, ‘Are you jesting?’ That is unfavorable.”
“They committed a substantial error,” he appended.
Trump’s pronouncements on Thursday signified another setback to Starmer’s endeavors to leverage his intimate rapport with the US and personal engagement with the president to sustain solidarity with European allies on trade and defense considerations, encompassing backing for Ukraine.
“I perceive him to be a decent individual, but he executed something appalling. He exhibited an unwillingness to assist us,” Trump conveyed.
