In the northern part of Moldova, fresh petroleum films and deceased avian creatures were discovered this Monday, March 23, near the Dniester River, at the location where petroleum derivatives escaped following the Russian Federation’s assault on the Dniester hydroelectric complex, as stated by Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder.

As he mentioned, in order to halt the dispersal of pollutants, seven supplementary filtration units have been set up in close proximity to the settlement of Arionesti.

“I am presently positioned on the bridge within the village of Ungur, Oknytskyi region. We are observing emerging oil residues which are still flowing from the upper sections of the waterway,” Hajder conveyed, according to Newsmaker.

The Minister detailed that Ukraine, for its part, has halted the origin point of the contamination. The latest stains are potentially emanating from the remaining collection point, where lingering oil may have persisted. Specialists from the National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) are determining the reason behind the mortality of the two birds. The ramifications of the contamination and countermeasures will be clarified during a meeting involving experts and environmental advocates.

Previously, Moldova implemented an environmental emergency status due to contamination of the Dniester River, which originated from Ukrainian territory. The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador and issued a formal protest note regarding the Russian strike on the Dniester hydroelectric facility on March 7.
