Trump's postponed meeting with Xi Jinping will strengthen China's position: what exactly could affect this

US President Donald Trump's request to postpone a crucial summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping could play into Beijing's hands, though it potentially allows both sides to avoid complications related to a US war with Iran, China's most important strategic partner in the Middle East.

And if Trump loses control of the conflict, which is already threatening a global economic crisis, it could strengthen China's position in the negotiations — if they take place at all — according to experts.

Beijing has never officially confirmed the long-awaited visit and has yet to provide an official response to the proposed “5-6 week” delay, although Trump has said that “China is not opposed” to rescheduling the meeting, which the White House said was previously scheduled for March 31 to April 2.

At the same time, Beijing's tone remains positive, with Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian saying that the leaders' summits play an “irreplaceable” role in guiding bilateral relations.

Behind the scenes, however, officials are remaining cautious. There is a possibility that China or the United States could decide to walk away from the talks, according to two Chinese sources familiar with the matter.

“If a war in Iran results in heavy casualties among Chinese citizens or significant damage to Chinese assets in the region, then Trump will not be able to come,” the source said.

Previously, Trump accused Zelensky of weak assistance in protecting against Iranian drones, and also made a loud statement about winding down the war against Iran.
