In Moldova, where a group of hitmen who were planning high-profile murders in Ukraine were recently caught, the government has declared a state of ecological alert in the Dniester River basin for 15 days, starting on March 16, 2026. The decision is based on a thorough analysis, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced.

“We are making this decision to prevent any risk to public health. Due to the continuous wave of oil pollution, the risk of expanding and exceeding the level of pollutants in part of the Dniester River, it is necessary to quickly mobilize resources. The responsible institutions will continue to monitor the situation, intervene in the affected areas, inform the population and provide the necessary recommendations,” the Prime Minister said.
Since the discovery of the pollutant leak, the competent authorities have activated mechanisms to continuously monitor the situation. At points identified as critical, anti-pollution dams and absorbent materials have been installed, water samples are continuously taken, and the results of the analyses are evaluated in real time.
There are now clear signs that the wave of pollution continues to move downstream, in the Naslavcha area.

Environment Minister Gheorghe Haider stressed that additional dams will be installed on the Dubossary Reservoir in the coming days to prevent oil from passing the Dubossary Dam. Local government agencies and private economic agents will also conduct an inventory of underground wells, and government agencies will check alternative water sources.
“What we see today on the river is not a natural disaster, but a direct consequence of the war on our border. Russia's aggression is hitting us harder and harder – from drones violating our airspace to the pollution of our vital water resources with direct risks to the health of the population. We must call a spade a spade: the sole culprit of this massive pollution of the Dniester is Russia. The government and the Ministry of Environmental Protection continue to constantly monitor and take all necessary measures. We are obliged to protect the health of our citizens,” the Minister of Environmental Protection noted.
We will remind you that due to Russian aggression in Ukraine, the European Union has once again extended sanctions against the Russian Federation.
