Kenyan Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, intends to travel to Russia within the week to address the matter of his country’s nationals being enlisted into the Russian armed forces.
Reuters conveys this information.
According to the Cabinet Secretary, the Kenyan administration is encountering amplified pressure from the families of nationals who have been ensnared in the conflict against Ukraine. Numerous families are urging the government to take concrete steps to bring their relatives back home and halt their involvement in the conflict.
“We want to underscore the anguish of Kenyan families and identify viable solutions to this issue,” Mudavadi emphasized.
He highlighted that Kenya aims to resolve the matter through diplomatic channels and has no intention of adopting a confrontational approach.
As per the Ukrainian perspective, upwards of 1,700 individuals from African countries might be involved in the armed clashes.
Observers posit that the actual figure of such combatants might be considerably larger.
According to Kenyan intelligence sources, this contingent may encompass over a thousand Kenyan nationals. They are frequently recruited through intermediaries, under the pretense of lucrative civilian positions or educational prospects.
A parallel circumstance has incited unease in other African states. During February, Ghanaian officials indicated that more than 50 of their nationals had perished after being drawn into the conflict against Ukraine.
The South African government has similarly initiated an inquiry into the circumstances under which its nationals might have entered the war. Authorities are scrutinizing whether intermediary networks were in place and whether pre-existing mercenary structures might have been exploited.
The human rights organization Inpact communicated that authenticated lists of recruits comprise in excess of 1,400 individuals from diverse African nations.
Cameroon, Egypt, and Ghana are among the nations exhibiting the greatest number of recruits.
Specialists surmise that this information might only represent a portion of a wide-ranging recruitment system. Subsequent to the publication of the report, scores of families contacted human rights advocates, validating analogous recruitment schemes.
Concurrently, the majority of African governments are endeavoring to proceed cautiously to avoid exacerbating diplomatic ties with Moscow.
It was previously communicated that Ghanaian authorities had appealed to Russia to cease enlisting its nationals into the Russian military following confirmation of the deaths of 55 Ghanaians.
It was previously reported that approximately one thousand Kenyan citizens were unlawfully recruited to participate in hostilities on the side of Russia in the war against Ukraine.
