A controversy has broken out in Turkey: meat from a racehorse was furnished in place of cow meat at a public dining facility intended for impoverished individuals.

This is according to reports by The Sun and BILD.

The episode surfaced when a diner stumbled upon a microchip in his meal – a device usually inserted into animals with microchips, which encompasses racehorses. It became evident that the chip had been previously placed in a four-year-old show jumping champion bearing the name Smart Latch.

The female horse had once participated in show jumping and secured multiple awards, but in 2025, she sustained a fracture, bringing her career to a close. She was dispatched to a farm to commence a fresh existence as a breeding animal. Following the discovery that she could not produce offspring, her proprietor freely bestowed Smart Latch to an equestrian club for children. Nonetheless, the mare never arrived.

The carrier transported the horse to an unlawful slaughterhouse, where its body was processed, and the meat was vended to the communal eatery, presented as the pricier bovine variety.

It’s worth mentioning that, in Turkey, the act of horse slaughter isn’t officially outlawed, but it is perceived as an affront to societal standards stemming from cultural and faith-based conventions. The unfolding of the deception triggered considerable outrage. Regional officials communicated their intent to undertake an exhaustive probe into the issue, with a promise to penalize the parties at fault.

We previously documented how a mare from the USA ascended to the position of the planet’s most senior equine.
