German mogul acquires Telegraph in £575m deal.

Billionaire Matthias Depfner, the Chief Executive Officer of the German media conglomerate Axel Springer SE, has reached an agreement to acquire the British publication, The Telegraph, for £575 million (roughly $766 million). This acquisition offers Depfner entry into the UK marketplace and unifies two of Europe’s most impactful right-leaning news outlets.

This agreement concludes almost three years of ambiguity and political maneuvering for the publication, formerly linked to the Conservative Party and a platform for writers like Winston Churchill and Boris Johnson. Depfner intends to develop Axel Springer into a worldwide media holding organization that already possesses the German newspaper Bild, alongside the websites Politico and Business Insider, and is growing in Europe and the United States.

An initial endeavor to divest The Telegraph through RedBird IMI, a joint venture between RedBird Capital Partners and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, in 2024, collapsed due to apprehensions in the UK regarding overseas sway within the media landscape. The owner of The Daily Mail had previously attempted to procure The Telegraph for £500m, but the Labour government intervened with a regulatory probe.

The Depfner deal is presently undergoing scrutiny by British regulatory bodies, and commentators suggest it will not generate prior anxieties given the buyer’s “unquestionable reputation.” The newspaper has exhibited robust fiscal results, with subscription earnings reaching £81.1 million in 2024, a surge of 18% compared to the prior year, and overall earnings of £279 million.

Consequently, the procurement of The Telegraph for £575 million bolsters Axel Springer’s standing in the European arena and establishes a fresh channel for Depfner’s influence in the UK.
