US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin will take the place of Christie Noem as the Secretary of Homeland Security, as reported by ABC News.
Trump shared the news on social media Thursday afternoon.
“I am delighted to declare that highly esteemed United States Senator from the wonderful state of Oklahoma, Markwayne Mullin, will assume the role of United States Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS), starting on March 31, 2026,” he penned.
In the announcement, Trump stated that Noem had performed admirably in her position and would transition to the position of special envoy for America's Shield, a fresh endeavor for the Western Hemisphere.
This marks the initial removal in Trump's Cabinet during his second term in office.
Mullin informed reporters that he was “elated” to head the Department of Homeland Security and “eager to commence work.”
“My chief objective is to guarantee the safety of the country,” he stated.
In response, Noem also expressed gratitude to Trump for the novel assignment in a social media post.
“In this fresh capacity, I will have the opportunity to expand upon the partnerships and national security understanding I have cultivated over the preceding 13 months as Secretary of Homeland Security,” Noem wrote.
Prior to arriving at the determination, Trump engaged in discussions with Republicans and his close confidants, inquiring whether he ought to dismiss the secretary.
Sources indicate Trump was displeased with her showing at the Senate hearing, when Noem alleged the president was aware of a $220 million Department of Homeland Security advertising campaign financed by taxpayers.
The administration, however, asserts that Trump did not endorse this campaign.
