Russia changes tone: new round of talks offers cautious hope for peace

A new round of talks to end the war in Ukraine began in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, February 4, and this time the diplomatic atmosphere is markedly different from previous meetings. While forecasts remain cautious, sources in Kyiv and Washington are paying attention to signals from the Russian delegation that may indicate the Kremlin's willingness to at least test the possibility of a peaceful settlement.

According to people familiar with the consultations, the current talks are not like previous rounds. As Politico notes, the dialogue has become less formal and more substantive.

One of the American experts advising the Ukrainian side noted that for the first time in a long time, the negotiation process has ceased to resemble “painful teething.” In his opinion, under favorable conditions, the conflict could break out of its deadlock as early as spring.

Former Ukrainian officials assess the situation more cautiously, but they also recognize a change in tone from Moscow. The Russian delegation is headed by representatives of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Igor Kostyukov and Alexander Zorin, who demonstrate a more pragmatic approach and avoid ideological statements typical of Vladimir Putin or Sergei Lavrov. According to sources, the Russian side is focusing on technical details, which was previously atypical for it.

Analysts attribute this transformation to the fact that the Kremlin is closely watching the growth of Europe's defense ambitions. The increase in weapons production, discussions about strategic autonomy and the gradual reduction of dependence on the United States may not correspond to Moscow's long-term interests. A potential peace agreement concluded now could slow down this process – and this, according to experts, may be one of Russia's motives.

At the same time, some analysts warn against excessive optimism. Retired Australian General Mick Ryan emphasizes that after years of war, it is difficult for Putin to demonstrate tangible “achievements,” and any settlement without the ability to declare victory could create serious domestic political risks for him.

It should be noted that US President Donald Trump also reported some progress in the negotiations on Ukraine. The American leader hinted that “good news” should be expected soon.

“We have a lot going on… I think we're doing very well with Ukraine and Russia. This is the first time I'm talking about this. You know, I think we might have some good news,” the American leader said.

Recall, the first talks between Russian, Ukrainian and American officials ended on January 24. According to Zelensky, they ended on a rare positive note. At the same time, Ukraine's position on resolving territorial issues within the framework of negotiations to end the war has not changed.
