The European Union has put a stop to the advancement of a key commercial pact with the United States. This determination arises amidst US President Donald Trump's demands concerning Greenland and the imposition of duties on specific EU member nations. Bernd Lange, the head of the European Parliament’s Committee on International Trade, which oversees the ratification procedure, stated on the X social media platform.
“It is now official: the EU-US accord is paused until further notification. Our negotiation team has just resolved to halt operations on the legal implementation of the ‘Turnberry Agreement’,” Lange pointed out.
He underscored that “our self-determination and territorial inviolability are on the line,” thus “the routine is unfeasible.”
As a reminder, Trump declared the implementation of a 10% duty on products originating from European countries that have backed Greenland, in response to US threats to take control of the semi-autonomous territory within Denmark, commencing on February 1. He specified that the duties would rise to 25% unless and until “a consensus is achieved regarding the total and conclusive acquisition of Greenland.”
The announcement incited an immediate outcry from European leaders, who are currently deliberating on subsequent measures. Ursula von der Leyen conveyed in a statement that “duties weaken transatlantic partnerships and create the potential for a hazardous downward trend,” while French President Emmanuel Macron deemed Trump’s intimidations to be “inadmissible.”
