Iranian Vessel Capsizes in Caspian, Transporting Ammunition Destined for Russia

A vessel that had traversed between Iran and the Russian Federation on 20 occasions, possibly ferrying armaments for the invaders, foundered in the Caspian Sea.

The Iranian freighter Rona, suspected of conveying weapons to Russia, suffered a wreck in the Caspian Sea.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan communicated information about the maritime incident.

The vessel carried 14 individuals of Indian and Iranian nationality; all were successfully rescued.

As per tracking information, the bulk carrier Rona docked at the harbors of Astrakhan, Makhachkala, and Azov on 20 separate instances from October 2024 to December 2025, after journeying from the Iranian ports of Amirabad and Anzeli.

Based on information from the Russian Telegram channel “Important Stories”, the aforementioned bulk carrier was en route to Astrakhan when the accident occurred.

In 2023, CNN investigators concluded that the primary channel for purported seaborne weapons shipments from Iran to Russia passes between Astrakhan and Amirabad, Anzali. The Wall Street Journal elaborated that this is the means by which hundreds of thousands of artillery projectiles and diverse types of munitions arrive in Russia for the conflict against Ukraine.

It is worth recalling that Iran is currently facing its most significant demonstrations in half a century. According to human rights organizations Iran Human Rights and Iran International , potentially thousands of individuals have perished during 16 days of nationwide protests against the government there.
