The Danish Armed Forces are augmenting their military footprint in Greenland. Starting today, January 14, aircraft, naval vessels, and land forces will be stationed on the island and its adjacent waters. Denmark will not be acting alone – fellow European nations are also prepared to join in reinforcing the NATO military presence around Greenland in the near future. This information was disseminated by the DR broadcasting corporation on Wednesday.

This resolution, as verified by both the Greenland administration and the Danish Defense Ministry, occurred amidst the backdrop of security uncertainties and political friction concerning the Arctic.

“This is a vital defense measure during a period of security instability, where future events are unpredictable,” conveyed Danish Defense Minister Truels Lund Poulsen.

A number of NATO countries will participate in the exercise, known as Operation Arctic Endurance. The defense minister did not specify which nations, but Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson communicated via X Network today that Swedish officers are deploying to Greenland.

“Officers from the Swedish Armed Forces are presently arriving in Greenland. They form a part of a contingent from several allied nations. Together, they will lay the groundwork for forthcoming actions within the Danish exercise “Operation Arctic Endurance”. Sweden is dispatching personnel from its Armed Forces at the request of Denmark,” the chief of the military department penned.

Although officially it is deemed unrelated to Trump's declared intentions to take Greenland and impinge upon it, a certain link with the US can still be detected.

Ostensibly, these actions aren’t meant for defense against the US, yet concerns have been voiced regarding the US president and his recurrent remarks about aspiring to seize control of Greenland. The Defense Minister was questioned about the directives Danish soldiers have been given in the event US troops suddenly arrive with the goal of seizing the island.

“That is a highly hypothetical inquiry. I find it implausible that one NATO country would assault another NATO country,” Truels Lund Poulsen responded, underscoring that he sees no merit in such conjecture.

Simultaneously, he conceded that global circumstances have shifted, and irrespective of the US president’s reiterated statements, the matter remains pertinent. When probed regarding the current orders for the Danish military, the minister replied decisively:

“It's consistent with prevailing protocol: if under attack, the defense of the kingdom is mandatory.”

The Danish Arctic Command will bear the responsibility of keeping the Greenlandic populace informed and maintaining ongoing liaison with the appropriate local authorities.

As a reminder, Greenland has reached out to the UK to counteract menaces from Donald Trump. Greenland's Minister of Business and Energy, Naaja Nathansen, articulated this during her address to British legislators in London.

Natansen’s assemblies transpire amidst escalating pressure from the White House, wherein Trump has intensified threats to assume control of Greenland, a mineral-abundant semi-autonomous territory within Denmark, possibly by force.

Trump asserts that governing Greenland is vital to U.S. security in light of threats emanating from Russia and China. Recently, he indicated that the United States would “take Greenland — by diplomacy or by force.”

The entreaty to British politicians followed Denmark’s warning that US belligerence towards Greenland could shatter the NATO military collaboration. Both Copenhagen and Nuuk have consistently declared that Greenland is “not for sale.”
