The head of European diplomacy, Kaia Kallas, reacted to Russia’s assault using the Oreshnik rocket, deeming its implementation a manifest heightening of tensions against Ukraine, along with a warning intended for Europe and the United States. She conveyed this via the X platform on December 9, offering commentary on Russia’s audacious offensive against the Lviv area.
Putin has no desire for accord; Russia’s riposte to diplomatic efforts is more rockets and devastation. This lethal cycle of repeated, large-scale Russian offensives will persist unless we assist Ukraine in disrupting it.
EU member nations should delve deeper into their stores of aerial defense systems and honor their pledges promptly. Furthermore, we must augment the expenses of this conflict for Moscow, notably through reinforcing sanctions.
By way of reminder, the previous night, Russia assailed Lviv with an Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile, presenting it as a reaction to the Kremlin’s concocted drone strike on one of dictator Vladimir Putin’s residences. This signifies the second instance of employing such weaponry against Ukraine throughout the comprehensive war; a year and a half prior, the Russian Federation targeted the Yuzhmash facility in the Dnieper with it.
Following yesterday’s aggression, Ukraine called for an emergency session of the UN Security Council. According to Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga, such maneuvers by the aggressor in proximity to the EU and NATO border constitute a grave menace to the security of the European landmass, as well as a trial for the transatlantic alliance.
