Seven elephants perished, and one sustained injuries, as a passenger train ran into a herd in the northeastern part of India. The event transpired in the early hours of Saturday in the Khojai region of Assam province.

This information comes from Reuters.

As per the local police superintendent, V. V. Rakesh Reddy, the train was en route to Delhi. The North Eastern Frontier Railway states that the occurrence took place on a part of the track not officially recognized as an elephant migration path. The operator, spotting the creatures on the rails, engaged the emergency brakes, but the elephants unexpectedly charged towards the train.

The impact took place at 2:17 a.m. local time, leading to the locomotive and five cars leaving the rails. The railway reported that none of the passengers or crew sustained any wounds.

For the time being, movement on this line is restricted: trains are being temporarily rerouted. Repair operations are underway.

It is worth remembering that recently, a significant air disaster happened in North Carolina, taking the lives of multiple individuals, including the well-known NASCAR driver Greg Biffle.
